Derelict Great Western Railway King class 4-6-2 express passenger locomotive number 6023 King Edward II at Barry, 1977. Steam locomotives were withdrawn from British Railways in 1968. Some locomotives were preserved, and there were campaigns to save some locomotives, as the grafitti shows in this photograph. However most were scrapped. The scrap yard on Barry Island run by the Woodham brothers dismantled about 100 locomotives. The site concentrated on breaking up rolling stock first, and eventually around 200 locomotives were rescued from the scrapyard and preserved. King Edward II left Barry in 1984.
